I don't think I can agree with "The rat bike: At some point, a poorly maintained bike stops being an eyesore and turns into art." I think they probably turn into junk.

I agree
except many rat bikes (like rat rods) only look ratty, they are mechanically sound if you look past the ugly.
that's part of why they are built that way with a lot of effort

I like the part where people called in sick so they could ride... Been there done that.

Except for Harley, most of the bikes I saw in the 60's and 70's were small or mid-sized compared to today. In the early 70's I remember stopping at a rest area on the Interstate and I saw a 450cc bike loaded up for a long trip. I don't know why but I never could stop thinking about that, even to this day. I suppose that's why I think "any" bike loaded up for a trip is the most interesting. They speak adventure.
